Minimum colour. Maximum shape.
EKA fashion design department’s HULL HALL (Crazy Grey) show of experimental shapes arrived in the atrium in Viru Keskus.

HULL HALL is a series of experimental shapes by the Estonian Academy of Arts, with the pale nature of grey blending with shape play striving to unprecedented facets. The apparent minimalist character of colour as one of the main components of the show allows material to open up in a completely new perspective, creating an engaging diversion to everyday life and attracting with its structural outrageousness. It isn’t just a grey mass, but an alternative universe of wilful creations that is the focus point of abstract chains, bodies reaching to heights and flowing conquerors of worlds.

The course conducted under the leadership of Liisi Eesmaa provoked students with its raw material. All shapes have been made of square textile plates meant for filling upholstered furniture, given a new life instead of going to the dump. This is one of the most difficult materials in the history of the series of shape experiments. This crashed the hard drives of brains and made the most skilful hands feel awkward, because the material refused to bow to fashion designers’ main working methods – cutting and sewing. Thus, they had to keep inventing new methods of creating something of a material that is not fabric. Nevertheless, the apparently nondescript and stubborn material eventually gave birth to a world of marvellous characters with a dreamy bird making 60 flings with its wings, the “roots” of the mother tree gathering in 35 metres of material, the headdress of a nun’s habit bearing the load of 8 kg, and bubbly surfaces filled with sounds enchanting with their soporific therapeutic effects. Each creature in this world tells a story to the observer as well as flings you high and tantalizes with a larger or smaller dose of grey.

The show with its installations will remain in the atrium of Viru Keskus from February 12 to 23 and after that, it can be found on large-scale photographs in the gallery leading from Tammsaare Park to Viru Keskus up to the end of March.
