The new tram line to Viru Keskus has commenced operations

9.12.2024

On Friday, November 29, an extraordinary event took place in front of Viru Keskus – after several years of extensive construction work, the Vanasadam tram line was officially opened. The new tram line, numbered 2, connects the passenger harbor with the city center and will operate on the route from Vanasadam to Uus-Paala Street, which will be extended to the airport in the future.

For the new tram branch, a turn was built off the Tartu Road tram track to the left onto Gonsiori Street. The route then proceeds through Laikmaa, Hobujaama, and Ahtri Streets to the vicinity of the harbor. Via Laeva, Kuunari, and Kai Streets, the tram passes in front of the A-terminal at the harbor, continues on Logi Street, and moves through under Linnahall along Rumbi Street. After passing the Cultural Hub, the tram line joins the Viru Square tram line running between Mere and Põhja Boulevard.

With this, all roadworks around Viru Keskus have been completed, and bus traffic has resumed at the city’s central Bus Terminal. Therefore, it is now convenient to visit the center by public transport, car, bicycle, and of course on foot. From the Bus Terminal under Viru Keskus, nine bus lines commence – lines number 1, 14, 18, 18A, 20A, 29, 34, 38, and 44. The parking house of Viru Keskus, with its 350 parking spaces, offers the most affordable parking option in the city center, and there are also 31 spots designated for charging electric vehicles, with the first hour of parking free during charging. Visitors arriving by bicycle can securely leave their bikes in nearby bicycle parking areas around Viru Keskus, which also feature BiKeep bike charging stations.

See how the festive tram line opening and the first ride went here. The first tram to hit the line was beautifully adorned with an elegant oak wreath from the flower shop Decoration & Fleur. At the festive opening, entertainment was provided by the Brass Band of the Police and Border Guard Board, while the world-famous slack-liner Jaan Roose ensured an adrenaline rush.
