Music by Maris Pihlap and Marten Kuningas at the Food Hall in Viru Keskus

1.07.2022

Viru Keskus, the shopping and entertainment centre with the greatest visitor numbers in Estonia, is in a process of rapid renewal, offering ever more eventful experiences encompassing all senses. Today a next new step is taken in the recently opened Food Hall in Viru Keskus with playlists compiled specifically for Viru Food Hall by musicians Marten Kuningas and Maris Pihlap.

You can enjoy the playlists here.

The more than 12 hour soundtrack compiled by well-known artists includes bright morning pieces, bracing midday pulses and an excitingly thrumming evening selection. Nobody is scorned in Food Street for picking a bite from your companion’s plate or starting your dinner with the dessert and likewise you can hear there global golden classics, bright and bold local indie, ethno and art-pop that covers a whole third of the playlists. Special attention is paid tomusic created by women – both here and now or decades ago.

“We have created for Tallinn citizens and our visitors a unique place for enjoying tastes and company where we wish to provide a harmony of all details. That is why we would like to enrich the complete experience for all senses by adding a fitting musical background to the high quality environment of Food Hall  by cooperating with the best Estonian musicians,” said Kristel Sooaru, the Marketing and Communication Manager of Viru Keskus.

The playlist created by Marten Kuningas is characteristically inspiring beyond trends. “I picked some tunes that have caught my ear during this last year, but I also included some older favourites,” commented Marten. “Morning is fluid and happy with mostly instrumental music. Lunch is dynamic and joyful with mostly songs familiar from the radio. Evening holds groovy thrumming with dance and mystery added in. I tried to compile the list so that it would support the individual in a public space with its positive message and brightness, being at the same time also sufficiently meditative and mysterious, without losing focus,” he said.

Conveying the motto of the centre “Change begins in the centre”, the singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Maris Pihlap, who has recently published a new solo album “The Search for Life Within”, has combined familiar and cross-border approaches. “I started to think about everything that Viru Keskus means for me and others, what expectations we have of this space,” the musician remarked. “With my music choices I tried to expand these borders and in times step over them to add freshness to the comfortable and familiar. According to my tastes it also includes a drop of heritage, a bold dash of Estonian music and music by women,” she explained.

The food area is located in the Estonia avenue wing with outdoor terraces next to Tammsaare Park. Viru Food Hall is open daily 11:00–22:00 and on Fridays and Saturday up to 23:00. Delicacies created by 15 different kitchens can be enjoyed right there or as takeout.
